About me

Illustrated portrait of Maren Hollis

I've been copyediting for going on nine years now, five of them at the same small university press, which means I read for a living and then come home and read some more, which probably says something about me I haven't fully sat with.

I copyedit manuscripts for a small university press in Asheville, which mostly means I spend my working hours making other people's sentences say what they actually mean. I read the way some people run, most days, usually forty-some minutes before bed with the same reading lamp I've had since grad school. My partner and I have a standing two-player game night, which is why you'll notice I care a disproportionate amount about how a board game holds up with exactly two people at the table, most reviews assume four and I'm always doing the mental math to translate. I write about a book or a game here after I've actually finished it and have something specific to say, not on a schedule, which is the whole reason the dates on this site are irregular.

Where I am: Asheville, North Carolina

Currently rereading the back half of the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy for the third time, mostly to see if it still holds up now that I've read enough hard SF to notice when the science is doing real work versus just sounding good.

What's here

Book reviews, board game reviews, and personal essays. No schedule, no affiliate links, nothing sponsored. I write about a book or a game after I've actually finished it and have something to say, which is why the dates on here are irregular.
